In one day in Guwahati you can see Kamakhya Temple, take the ferry to Umananda island, visit the Assam State Museum, walk the Brahmaputra riverfront at Uzan Bazar and catch sunset near Saraighat Bridge. Start by 7 AM to beat temple queues.
Morning: Kamakhya and Nilachal Hill
Start early at Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill. Queues build quickly after 9 AM and on weekends. Drive up to Bhubaneswari Temple at the top for views over the city and the river.
Late morning: Umananda island
Head to Uzan Bazar for the ferry to Umananda, a small temple on a river island in the Brahmaputra. Ferry timings depend on the river level.
Afternoon: museums and markets
- Assam State Museum near Dighalipukhuri for history and tribal culture.
- Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra for Assamese art and architecture.
- Fancy Bazar and Paltan Bazar for shopping and street food.
Evening: the river
Walk along the Brahmaputra riverfront and end the day near Saraighat Bridge for sunset.
Getting around
Temple parking is tight and city traffic is slow at peak hours, so many visitors book a car with driver on the 8 hours / 80 km package. See the Guwahati city tour.
