Driving to Tawang in Winter: Snow, Sela and What to Expect

By the ZG Ridezz team in Guwahati. Published 15 Oct 2026. About 1 min read.

Quick answer

Winter (December to February) brings snow around Sela, freezing mornings and the chance of short road closures on the Tawang route. Take an SUV or 4x4, start early each day, carry warm clothes and your Inner Line Permit, and keep one spare day in your plan.

The route

Guwahati to Tawang is about 450 to 500 km via Tezpur, Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang. Most people take two days each way.

Sela in winter

The road crosses the Sela area at around 13,000 ft. The Sela Tunnel, opened in 2024, now carries much of the traffic below the old pass, but the approach roads still see snow and ice in winter.

What to take

  • An SUV or 4x4 with good tyres. Ask us about snow chains.
  • Heavy woollens, gloves, caps and waterproof shoes.
  • Your Inner Line Permit, printed and on your phone.
  • Water, snacks and a power bank.

Driving tips

  • Start after sunrise once the ice softens, and finish before dark.
  • Use low gears on descents and avoid sudden braking.
  • If the army or police stop traffic for snow clearance, wait it out.
